Impact

We invited five different photographers from four different countries to use an analogue camera and portray their glace of the coffee industry in El Salvador, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Honduras and Nicaragua, from the farm to the cup.

The pictures were revealed with coffee, to be printed and exposed in different museums across Central America to finally be exposed at the Specialty Coffee Expo in Boston where they will be auctioned. The bids on these pictures will become donations to support 100 micro-projects from the five different countries that will help to improve the living conditions of many small coffee farmers.

FAQs about the project

Q:

Why photography with a single camera?

Everything under one lens. All photo tours and material were taken by a single camera, which was moved from country to country, ensuring the same quality, resources and equipment to each photographer, the only variant: their glance. The exhibition seeks to show those who produce the coffee in Central America from one single len, but multiple glances.

Q:

How do you select the photographers for the annual exhibition?

We made an open invitation to professional photographers with experience in negative analogue photography, one in each Central American country: Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala. Each photographer applied with a portfolio of 10 photographs, showing work related to the documentation of human experiences or in rural areas. Finally a board of advisors selected the one photohrapher from El Salvador, Guatemala, Costa Rica and two from Nicaragua. Unfortunately, although we extended the invitation in Honduras, we couldn’t find any photographer with experience with analogue camera, therefore we decided to give the opportunity to two photographers from Nicaragua.

Q:

How will the funds will be distributed for each project?

Raices Colectivo will be in charge of the funds' distribution. They are an autonomous and independent social enterprise that works in the research, and data analysis of the challenges for the coffee industry in Central America based in Nicaragua. They will work with an audit firm to assign the budget for each project and develop a report. You can visit our main website to follow up on the relevant information about each project.
